Houston Surgical Weight Loss – Are You a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
Transforming Your Health Through Bariatric Surgery
Weight loss surgery can be life-changing, helping individuals achieve a healthier lifestyle and a slimmer, more confident appearance. However, bariatric surgery is not the right choice for everyone.
At Houston Surgical Weight Loss, we take a personalized and comprehensive approach to determine whether weight loss surgery is appropriate for you. During your initial consultation, our experienced bariatric team, led by Dr. Irfan Wadiwala, will evaluate your health history, lifestyle, and weight-related conditions.
If you are not a candidate for surgery, we will guide you through alternative weight management strategies, including customized dietary plans and non-surgical options to help you achieve your goals safely and effectively.
Who Qualifies for Weight Loss Surgery
During your consultation, our surgical team will carefully review your medical history, current health, and previous weight loss efforts to determine eligibility.
Common procedures, such as LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding and other advanced bariatric techniques, are recommended only for qualified candidates.
You may be considered a candidate for weight loss surgery if you meet the following criteria:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher, regardless of other health conditions.
- BMI between 30–35 with weight-related health conditions (comorbidities) such as:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Heart disease or hypertension
- Osteoarthritis or joint problems
- Fatty liver disease
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Certain cancers and other obesity-related conditions
- Age between 18 and 65 years old.
- Demonstrated efforts to lose weight through diet and exercise without long-term success.
- Must not be dependent on drugs or alcohol.
- Must be physically and psychologically prepared to undergo surgery and commit to long-term lifestyle changes for lasting results.
Note: A detailed medical assessment with Dr. Wadiwala is the best way to confirm if you are a good candidate for bariatric surgery.
Your initial consultation is complimentary.
Understanding Your BMI (Body Mass Index)
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important tool used to evaluate whether your weight is within a healthy range for your height. While BMI is not a perfect measurement—it does not account for factors such as age or muscle mass—it provides a useful starting point in assessing obesity-related health risks.
BMI Classifications:
- 18–24: Normal weight
- 25–29: Overweight
- 30–34: Moderate obesity
- 35–39: Severe obesity
- 40 and above: Morbid obesity
If your BMI is 35 or higher, or 30 or higher with obesity-related health conditions, you may qualify for bariatric surgery.
How to Calculate Your BMI
Use our BMI Calculator to quickly determine your Body Mass Index. After entering your weight and height, compare your results with the classification chart above.
While BMI provides valuable insight, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
A comprehensive evaluation by our bariatric team will help determine if surgery is right for you and which procedure would provide the safest and most effective results.
